We are Darra & Kenya

We are the founders & co-directors of Focus Fairies Mentoring in Chicago, IL.

In 2017 we knew we needed to start a program that helped girls in the way we needed when we were young.

Our vision is to uplift Chicago communities through facilitating community-based mentorship for young girls & women of color, by creating a culture of excellence, community-focused belonging, and giving back to improve Chicago’s tomorrow.

We serve a diverse group of girls and young women ages 7 to 21 years old. Our mentees are all of races and ethnicities--with a focus on Black and Brown girls and young women--who reside in low income communities in Chicago, IL.

We serve this demographic because we want to help girls and young women find their voice, gain confidence, and gain skills that allow them to be a part of the change in their community.

Whimsical Wishes and Wonder centers learning objectives on self-awareness, self-esteem, self-advocacy, leadership, and empathy in a growing Fairy. Whimsical Wishes and Wonder sets the conditions for participating Fairy Mentees to wonder, enjoy curiosity, and begin their value development process.

A huge part of our mission is helping each girl find their unique skills and talents that they can use to start a career and give back to their community. We hope with every girl we help they continue the mission by being a leader in their communities.

Being a adolescent girl or young women already comes with its own set of challenges, but combined with living in communities plagued with violence and poverty the challenges are compounded. We help our girls through the trauma they have experienced and what they will be faced with in the future.

Focuses On:

Young girls go through so many changes through puberty and many don't have the guidance on how to properly care for their changing bodies. This leads to poor personal hygiene and a lack of confidence in their bodies. Living in under represented communities also limits exposure to proper etiquette needed in various situations in life.

Trust

Focuses On:

When girls are living in a state of survival in unsafe communities they struggle with forming healthy relationships and forming their true identity. Most girls we mentor lack trust because they have been shown trusting is dangerous. We help our mentees develop a sense of self, be able to tell their story, and develop trust.
